CHIROPRACTIC QUESTIONS YOU’VE NEVER ASKED (BUT ALWAYS WONDERED)

If you’re new to the world of chiropractic care, you may have questions. How long does a session last? What does a chiropractor actually do? What should you wear to an appointment? And is a chiropractor really a doctor? Today, we’re answering all the chiropractic questions you’ve never asked (but always wondered).

QUESTIONS FOR THE CHIROPRACTOR

  • How long is a typical visit to the chiropractor?
If it’s your very first visit to someone like Dr. McSweeney in Reno, you can expect your appointment to take between 30 and 45 minutes. Much of that time is spent in discussion, and you’ll also be asked to complete paperwork for a thorough overview of your lifestyle, personal activity, nutritional, medical, and pharmacological history.

If you’re coming back for follow-up care, visits can be anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. Dr. McSweeney uses a mix of therapies to treat your issue, including G5 massage, moist heat, spinal disk therapy, electrical stimulation, and more, and she’s conscious about testing patients throughout treatment to ensure everything is working appropriately.

  • What should I wear to the chiropractor?
Since you’ll need to be able to lie down easily, wear something that doesn’t restrict your movement. Loose clothing tends to make this easier, and it’s also a good idea to avoid excessively bulky outfits or skirts and dresses if you don’t want to accidentally flash the doctor!
  • What actually happens during my chiropractic session?
At Dr. McSweeney’s office in Reno, your session will involve hands-on manipulation and other therapies to address your pain. She may make nutritional recommendations or show you exercises and stretches you can use at home or at work.
  • Is a chiropractor really a doctor?
A doctor of chiropractic isn’t a medical doctor, as they hold no medical degree. However, they do have years of training and must pass an exam to become a chiropractor. Dr. McSweeney graduated with a degree in sports medicine before being accepted to the Palmer West Chiropractic College. She then completed a two-year preceptorship at her father’s chiropractic office before setting out on her own. She also attends annual seminars and completes over 30 hours every year in specialized nutrition studies and more than 25 hours annually in additional studies.
