There are millions of happy chiropractic patients in this country, but some people have little or downright wrong information about chiropractic care that keeps them from even considering its value. One of the most common myths is the idea that chiropractic adjustments can weaken the back, which means that you simply can’t stop once you’ve begun. Here’s why that’s not true.
Understanding Back Problems
This misconception is caused by a simple misunderstanding of back problems. In the most simplistic terms, back problems develop because the back becomes “stuck.” Once that happens, the back becomes stiff and tight and stuck fast. By unsticking your back though chiropractic adjustments, you can restore it to its full function.
The strength (or lack of it) in your back has nothing to do with chiropractic care. The strength or weakness of your spine is directly related to exercise. People who don’t exercise as much often require more chiropractic care because their back is more likely to become stiff and stuff. In fact, regular exercise is one of the best thing you can do to help keep your spine strong and healthy.
Choosing Health
If you’re unsure how to begin exercising because of ongoing back issues, Dr. McSweeney may be able to help. Not only can she help unstick your back and recommend exercises to begin developing strength and encouraging mobility, she can refer you to a personal trainer trained to help clients of all backgrounds.
Maintaining your spine health is a choice, and people can manage it however they like. Some patients prefer to wait until the very last minute to seek treatment, while others prefer preventative care to keep problems at bay. In either case, chiropractic care has nothing to do with the strength or weakness of a patient’s back, and one chiropractic visit doesn’t mean there must be more in your future. But be warned – you may find that you enjoy the feeling of optimal spine health so much, it’s just something you want to continue!
