SHOULD YOU GET A MASSAGE BEFORE OR AFTER YOU SEE THE CHIROPRACTOR?

One of our most-read blog posts answers the question, “Do I need a chiropractic adjustment or massage?” Today, we’re touching on the same topic. Chiropractic care and massage therapy can be wonderful complementary therapies, but should you get a massage before or after you see the chiropractor?

There’s no correct answer here, since it really comes down to personal preference. Still, understanding your specific situation can help you make the best decision.

Massage First, Adjustment Second

Treating especially tight muscles that are close to your joints can make those areas more accessible for your chiropractor. When you get a massage first, you’re doing all you can to ensure that your muscles are relaxed, which can make your adjustments more comfortable.

That’s why Dr. Lynelle McSweeney here in Reno offers massage therapy as part of her treatments. It’s a great “warm-up” for the body, which is why Dr. McSweeney starts her appointments with a G5 massage. She incorporates this kind of machine-assisted therapy as a way to manipulate soft tissue on the muscular and nervous system, while also enhancing the flow of local and general blood and lymphatic fluids.

Adjustment First, Massage Second

Following a chiropractic adjustment with a massage can also be valuable. Once your joints have been properly aligned, muscle tension can pull them back into misalignment. Keeping your muscles relaxed and neutral with massage therapy can help everything stay in place so that the benefits of your adjustments last longer. And then there’s the added bonus of the relaxation aspect. After a chiropractic adjustment, a massage feels wonderful!

Whichever order suits you, combining chiropractic care with massage therapy can be a wonderful way to relieve pain, restore mobility and generally improve your quality of life.
