SIX SIGNS YOU MIGHT NEED A NEW CHIROPRACTOR

When it comes to chiropractors, just like anything, there are good ones and there are bad ones. Fortunately, it’s not too tricky to distinguish the chiropractors who can really help you, and the ones who aren’t going to do much to help you. Here are six signs you might need a new chiropractor.

Six Signs of a Problematic Chiropractor

  1. Pushing wellness care. Sometimes dubbed “preventative care,” this can be an issue when a chiropractor recommends that you return regularly, even if you’re feeling no pain. We’ve written about preventative care before, but here’s the thing. Many of our patients find that after a few sessions of chiropractic care, they become a little more attuned to their bodies. When something feels a little off, they’re immediately aware of it, and they come in to feel better. Dr. McSweeney here in Reno will never recommend a routine care schedule – she just wants you to come in when you need her.
  2. Promoting silly gimmicks. The best measuring stick for your need of a chiropractor is pain. If you meet a chiropractor at a wellness fair or mall and take them up on their free postural analysis offer, it doesn’t necessarily follow that your poor posture necessitates an adjustment. There are more effective ways to combat poor posture.
  3. Questionable diagnostics. Muscle testing is a chiropractic tool, but it shouldn’t be a reason for adjustments in the absence of pain. And, depending on the diagnosis, the right move can often be a referral – to an internist, a personal trainer, even a neurologist. If your pain isn’t getting better with your chiropractor’s care, he or she should be happy to recommend other specialists who may be able to help.
  4. Treatments in areas that don’t hurt. Here’s what happens during treatment – you’ll either improve, worsen, or feel no change. If you’re getting treatments in areas that don’t hurt, you’ll either feel no change, or you’ll get worse. Be wary of chiropractors who can’t clearly explain why treatment in your hip is going to improve the low back pain you have.
  5. Excessive supplements. While many supplements can indeed be helpful, don’t listen to any chiropractor who insists only his or her pills are the ones that work.
  6. Too many visits. If your chiropractor is recommending treatment plans that run three, six, or twelve months, this is another warning sign. While it’s not uncommon to sometimes feel worse immediately following treatment, you should begin noticing vast improvement within a few days of your first few visits.

Signs of a Good Chiropractor

A good chiropractor is easy to distinguish – these doctors are the ones who work to get you out of pain as quickly as possible. He or she will offer good advice for avoiding that pain in the future, as well as sensible nutrition and supplement tips. There’s nothing gimmicky or questionable in their approach to your care, and they work well with other professionals.
