Health Tips for Surviving the Holidays

dr-lynelle-mcsweeney-reno-chiro-surviving-christmasWith Christmas and New Year’s Eve just around the corner, this is one of the busiest times of the year. And between the parties, the holiday baking, the shopping and all the planning, it’s easy to put stress on the body. To help keep your spine and nervous system healthy and functioning, try these simple health tips for surviving the holidays.

  • Stay active. You may be running errands all over town, but mindfulness is the point here. A short daily walk or some focused stretching is a great way to take some time to breathe and reflect. Use the time to remember the true value of the season.
  • Make time for restful sleep. Staying up late for parties and to wrap gifts is fine if you only do it a few times, but try to avoid too many late nights. Sleep is when the body heals itself, so don’t over schedule yourself and sacrifice slumber to fit it all in.
  • Be mindful of alcohol intake. Sure, it’s Christmas, but remember that alcohol is dehydrating and can be quite harmful to your health and wellbeing. Indulge, but do it appropriately.
  • Eat sensibly. Just as you’re enjoying alcoholic beverages with care, do the same with all those Christmas goodies. Choose sensible portions of your favorites, enjoy them slowly, and avoid going back for seconds.
  • Take time for yourself. The holidays can be a time of stress, depression and anxiety, and if this is your experience, give yourself space to process these emotions. Stress can have a profound impact on your spine health and overall wellbeing.
  • Keep your spine healthy. Dr. McSweeny is here for treatment if you find that you need it! Schedule an appointment to work out any kinks now, so that you can celebrate the holiday pain-free.
